Background
Dating back to 14th century Europe, Death materialized as a way to deal with one of the worst pandemics humans have ever faced - The Black Death.
To help understand and cope with the massive death toll, a ghastly skeletal figure was soon conjured up to represent the situation devastating Europe and Asia. As his persona evolved, Death came to be depicted wearing a black cloak and wielding a scythe, used to harvest the souls of those those about to die or the recently deceased.
Death is also known as the fourth Horseman of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, depicted as riding on his Pale Horse alongside the other three Horsemen - Famine, War & Conquest.
