However, it's also believed that vampires can be created from evil spirits possessing people or bodies. Holes appearing over a grave are widely believed to be a sign of a vampire attempting to claw its way out of it.
One of the more popular attempts to prevent the dead from turning included burying them with a scythe to appease any spirits attempting to possess the body.
